Radar sources & coverage

The map automatically switches between U.S. radar and worldwide precipitation as you pan and zoom. Ground radar is not available everywhere. Worldwide frames labeled Estimated blend ground radar, satellite estimates and weather models; the source can vary within the same image.

Forecast frames predict precipitation. The timeline includes every published frame: the full 18-hour HRRR model run in U.S. views (the remaining time depends on the run's age), and currently about one hour ahead with LibreWXR worldwide. Views crossing international borders use the worldwide timeline.

Local radar gaps, terrain blockage, estimates and provider outages can affect the display. The map projection shows approximately 85° south to 85° north. The basemap is archived imagery, not live satellite weather.

Worldwide precipitation

Blended and rendered by LibreWXR. Data credits below follow its source documentation and usage terms. Sources available in a particular frame depend on the provider's live feed.

LibreWXR converts, blends and interpolates these sources into precipitation tiles. Most data uses attribution licenses such as CC BY 4.0 or the linked government licenses; Italian radar derivatives use CC BY-SA 4.0. See the provider's source documentation for each dataset's terms.

Basemap and display

U.S. imagery: USGS The National Map. Worldwide imagery: NASA Blue Marble via NASA GIBS. Worldwide imagery has less street-level detail than the U.S. basemap.

Roads, boundaries and place names: OpenFreeMap, OpenMapTiles, and © OpenStreetMap contributors. Vector labels are drawn above precipitation to stay readable when zooming. If vector rendering is unavailable, basic USGS or NASA GIBS / OpenStreetMap labels are used.

Precipitation uses a classic green-to-red rain palette and display smoothing. U.S. colors are derived from the IEM reflectivity palette; worldwide tiles use LibreWXR's TWC palette. These are display treatments, not additional weather detail. Forecast grids and satellite/model estimates have lower resolution than some ground radar observations. Weak echoes may appear faint or transparent.
